Welcome to Mecklenburg-West Pomerania – the land of castles, gardens and mansions.

For centuries, Mecklenburg and also (West) Pomerania was known as the "Land of castles and cottages".

Since the knights serving under "Henry the Lion" crossed the Elbe in the 12th century and began with colonizing the East, expansive buildings were erected. Thus, the large estates with their mansions and historic farm buildings, with their patronage churches and magnificent landscaped parks have characterized the land for so long.

Even today more than 1,000 well preserved manor houses, or more correctly, mansions, bear witness to bygone days. More than 300 of them have been restored during recent years and are now open for tourists.

The following pages show some of the most attractive mansions in the state, constructed in a variety of styles and in different periods, which welcome you as guests.
