Originally, Schmuggerow Castle near Anklam in Western Pomerania belonged to one of the most important noble families of Northern Germany, the Schwerins. Their activities extended from Pomerania to Scandinavia and far beyond the borders of Germany, they actively participated in the Prussian reforms and wars of liberation. The manor house was planned and built between 1870 and 1873 by Paul Otto Brückwald, a famous architect of his time, for the daughter of Maximilian Count of Schwerin.

After several phases of reconstruction and restoration from 2007 – 2018, it has become a “castle for holidays and relaxation”. An outdoor swimming pool in front of the terrace provides cooling in summer. From the terrace you can also observe the bird life and the storks. A trampoline is available for children, a Swedish bath tub, whose water is heated by a wood stove, and a barbecue offer fun for young and old. There are 4 bicycles available to explore the nearby surroundings. In the castle itself you will find a large stucco hall that can accommodate 34 people. In the adjoining room, the “Swedish Room”, you can have a drink after a meal or be together in the evening.

In the basement there is a dining room and a small bar, as well as the kitchen to cook well for all the residents. The house is rented to self-catering. Minimum rental period is one week. A sauna, a room with fitness equipment, a room with a home cinema, as well as a billiard table, a table tennis table and a foosball table are also located on the lower floor. There is also a washing machine and a dryer. The guest rooms are equipped in such a way that each apartment has one or more bedrooms, bath/WC, a living room, as well as a small kitchenette. On the upper floor there are 2 apartments with several bedrooms each.

From Schmuggerow you can make nice trips to the imperial baths on Usedom (45 min), to Anklam, to Stralsund with its Swedish history or to the beaches of the Szczecin Lagoon (35 min). Berlin can be reached in one and a half hours. Hamburg is in three and a half 3.5 hours.

Schmuggerow Castle is one of the cheapest alternatives to a standard holiday because of its location and its offers. When fully occupied with 36 persons for 1 week, you pay no more than 5 Euro per person/per day for accommodation in the low season.
