For the crane migration to the Müritz or to the coast

Every year in autumn, when the big bales of straw are standing in the fields around the Müritz, when the harvest has been brought in, then comes the time of the cranes and wild geese.

Every morning and evening their trumpets and chatter fill the air. Until November, thousands of the “birds of happiness” will be resting here, to subsist in the harvested fields around the Müritz for the flight to the south. Whether in the Müritz National Park or on the western bank of the Müritz, there are ornithological guided tours to the sleeping and feeding places of the cranes during this time. The Ludorf Manor House offers the suitable arrangement “Crane migration”. State capital and Schwerin Castle

The heart of Schwerin beats on an idyllic island in the middle of Lake Schwerin. A heart that impressively reflects the incomparable diversity of the charming state capital. The Schwerin Castle. Surrounded by water and enchanting gardens, it stands magnificently and majestically for the eventful history, the countless art treasures and the picturesque nature of the old residence tow

In addition to the many architectural gems of the nobility and the church, entire streets with traditional, urban half-timbered houses have been preserved. Sleepy alleys and airy squares, dreamy backyards and romantic gardens, busy miles and quiet corners lend the city centre with its elegant town houses and simple half-timbered gables a very special charm.

The Mecklenburg Foundation in Schwerin is also highly recommended. The permanent exhibition “Mecklenburg so far – so near” shows, in addition to a folkloristic exhibition with everyday objects, works of painting and graphic art as a mirror of the art scene from the end of the 19th century up to the German division as well as rural life, the Mecklenburg dukes and grand dukes and “Castles in pictures” with a large collection of photographs of the castles and manor houses. Manor and castle hotels in the vicinity: Basthorst Castle, Vorbeck Manor, Kaarz Castle and Park, Wendorf Castle Hotel   Tourist information about Schwerin

Lake Kummerow

In the Mecklenburgische Schweiz near Teterow there is a large, dreamy lake, on whose shores you can find unspoiled nature and above all beautiful manor houses.

The hilly landscape can be explored with e-bikes. Gut Pohnstorf is a rental station and starting point for many tours.  For example to the photo art museum in the castle Kummerow. A dreamlike house, excellently renovated and with an impressive collection of photographs. With the blue-white fleet the lake Kummerow can be explored on the water. At a small canal,  that connects the Kummerow and Malchiner See, the Moorbauer is located in the middle of untouched nature. And offers fresh, regional dishes in the season. Small dishes and delicious cakes are available at the café in Pohnstorf.

Landart:  trail of sculptures at Burg Schlitz – Görzhausen

In the hilly landscape of “Mecklenburg Switzerland”, the northern lake district, there is a hidden art trail with very special sculptures. What an idea! An open-air exhibition space, a path along which you can walk and see not only art, but also breathtaking nature: Mecklenburg Switzerland. As a Swiss, you may take note of this name with amusement, but by Mecklenburg standards, the hills tower high. Gently the hills rise, gently they fall again, and so a smoothness, a harmony is created that is second to none.

This is where the count Hans von Schlitz moved to at the beginning of the 19th century, surrounding his newly built castle “Burg Schlitz” with an unusual park. Graf Schlitz planted many trees, including exotic plants, and skilfully laid out extensive walking paths. He has thirty-six monuments erected: columns, obelisks, grottos and even lakes. It was at this time that little village of Görzhausen was founded – today the centre of the path of modern sculptures that was created between here and Schlitz Castle. The two artists Wilfried Duwentester and Bernd Uiberall took up the Count’s idea at the end of the nineties of the 20th century and led it over to the encounter with contemporary sculptures. The sculptures “live” in the open air in correspondence with the vastness and the existing cultural landscape, which has been influenced by man for centuries and yet contains a strong, almost exuberant nature.

Brick Gothic along the Baltic Coast
Enormous churches and monasteries, magnificent town halls and town houses, mighty ramparts and city gates bear witness to the flourishing Hanseatic period in northern Germany.
For three centuries, the European economic centre of the Middle Ages was located on the Baltic Sea. Evidence of the wealth and power of this period still survives today in bright red brick. Stately mansions and opulent castles, the changing rule under the Mecklenburg princes crowned the often divided country with a wealth of princely residences. In addition to the imposing stately castles in Schwerin, still the seat of government of the state, Ludwigslust and Güstrow, the local medieval cathedrals and parish churches are also part of the heritage of monumental brick Gothic. Masterpieces of sacred brick Gothic can be found in the Hanseatic city of Wismar. The three main churches of St. Marien, St. Georg and St. Nikolaus tower enormously. Hotel near Wismar: Gamehl Castle, Saunstorf Manor, Directly on the Baltic Sea: Klein Strömkendorf Baltic Sea Manor, Redewisch Manor, Gross Schwansee Manor

The OZEANEUM in Stralsund

The OZEANEUM in Stralsund is the largest natural science museum on the German North and Baltic Sea coast and is one of the most popular and most visited museum institutions in Germany.

In addition to attractive aquariums and playful leisure activities, the focus is on education. The aim is to make the world of the oceans accessible to visitors in a readable form and to sensitize them to topics related to the blue water planet. www.ozeaneum.de

Lake Galenberg – pilgrimage site for ornithologists and bird lovers

Lake Galenbeck is a nutrient-rich shallow water lake of glacial origin with adjacent fenland – a biosphere reserve of international importance.

The lake and its surroundings offer an excellent migratory resting area and partly a wintering ground for ducks and geese. The lake is also an important breeding ground for water birds and a feeding ground for endangered species such as white-tailed eagles, ospreys and otters. In the village of Galenbeck, a well-signposted nature trail leads to a viewing platform with a view over the lake. Further viewpoints on the lake can be found at Fleethof and Heinrichswalde and a bicycle tour around the Galenbeck lake is also recommended. The Manor Kotelow provides its guests with bicycles and maps.

Hike to the oldest dance lime tree in Northern Germany

The circular hike begins in Kotelow, leads along field and meadow paths along the Mühlenbach to Galenbeck. Here you will find a manor house from the 18th century and a castle tower built in the 13th century, which is strongly inclined due to the swampy ground. The only remaining two-storey dance lime tree in Northern Germany is worth seeing. On a built platform there is room for 24 people – a wonderful place for a picnic. The church and an old fisherman’s house are also among the sights of the village. The way back leads through a forest area. There is a memorial stone and a plaque along the way, where the hiker can read the legend of the “Dead Man”. The route is 15 km and can be started from Manor Kotelow.

The Peene Valley in Vorpommern

An original and species-rich river landscape is to be explored. The Peene River with its numerous tributaries and peat bog and the lush, primeval forest-like banks is also known as the “Amazon of the North” and is one of the largest and the last unspoilt contiguous fenland areas in Central and Western Europe.

Among the animals native to this area are a number of reptiles, amphibians such as grass snakes and adders, as well as beavers, otters, white-tailed and lesser spotted eagles, marsh and marsh harriers and kingfishers. Of the 156 bird species registered in the Peene Valley, around 40 percent are on the country’s Red List of endangered species, including 26 species protected throughout Europe. The Peene Valley is thus considered one of the most important bird habitats in Germany. www.peenetal-landschaft.deÜbernachten can be visited at Relais und Chateaux Haus Gutshaus Stolpe, directly on the Peene, which offers a gourmet restaurant, holiday apartments, hotel rooms, concerts and the rustic bistro with beer garden “Fährkrug”. Beautiful holiday apartments embedded in a generous landscape are available in Schmarsow Castle, south of Stolpe. And stylishly in English country house style the hunting lodge Kotelow welcomes its guests.

Of Mecklenburg liquor and carriages

The Liepen moated castle is the home of the “Alte Pommeranze” – a bitter liqueur made from the bitter orange, also known as “the golden apple of the royal houses”. Verena Countess Hahn von Burgsdorff offers great tastings and guided tours of the vaulted cellar.

The carriage museum in Kobrow shows one of the largest collections of carriages in Europe. Tuesdays to Sundays 10.00 – 17.00 o’clock with fresh, homemade cake in the café.

North of the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Müritz is Krakow am See, a climatic health resort and a region with many small and large lakes and dense forests. The place itself is enchanting and dreamy. You can stay overnight in the castle Alt Sammit in spacious holiday apartments, surrounded by a spacious park and directly next to a riding stable. Many holidaymakers bring their horse with them or take riding lessons in the area.

“Müritzeum” – The Nature Experience Centre

Not only Germany’s largest freshwater aquarium with all the fish species found in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, but also a modern multimedia nature experience centre. Suitable for young and old alike. Here you can have fun in all weathers, experiment, learn, dream, experience home and marvel at the past, present and future. Fly with the cranes over the Müritz, marvel at the faithful replica of one of the thousand-year-old oaks or film the biggest carp of Mecklenburg in the outdoor pools with a small submarine camera. www.mueritzeum.de

The 3 Queens Palais in Mirow

The 3 Queens Palais in the Kavalierhaus attracts locals and tourists with a unique interactive exhibition on the Mirower Castle Island. On the castle island, which attracts thousands of tourists every year, lies the aristocratic summer residence as well as the St. John’s Church with the prince’s crypt. The exhibition focuses on the famous princesses of Mecklenburg-Strelitz:  Sophie-Charlotte Queen of Great Britain, Luise Queen of Prussia and her sister Friederike Queen of Hanover. The exhibition vividly reflects the lives of these famous personalities with many details, such as elaborately crafted figures and costumes. The visitors get to know the sights of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and learn about the scenic creation and the wonderful nature with its many lakes. Children can expand their knowledge through play. And at the end of the visit, cakes and pastries from the in-house café are tempting. Those who like it can browse through books in peace over a cup of coffee or tea or simply enjoy the beautiful view from the terrace over Lake Mirower See. Open daily from 10 to 18 o’clock.  Castle Island Mirow

The castle hiking trail between Stargard Castle and Penzlin Castle

The hike begins at Stargard Castle, the oldest preserved hilltop castle in northern Germany. The castle was once the political and strategic centre of East Mecklenburg. Dukes and military leaders resided here. The mighty brick castle, 50 metres above the town, is a witness to this significant past. From the castle tower, on a clear day, you can see 30 km into the Mecklenburger Land. The hike first leads through a forest area to the village of Ballwitz. Ballwitz was voted the “Most beautiful village in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern” in 2001. The hike continues along a beautiful nature reserve to the Prillwitz hunting lodge. Today it houses a hotel and restaurant. The hiking route continues to the Hohenzieritz Castle of the former Duke of Mecklenburg, father of Queen Luise of Prussia, who died here at the age of 34. Between Hohenzieritz and Werder lies the nature reserve Rosenholz with interesting spring moors and tree populations. Following the hiking trail you will reach the large town lake of Penzlin. The Old Castle Penzlin, today a museum for magic and witch-hunting in Mecklenburg, was from 1501 to 1929 in the possession of the knight family of the von Maltzan’s. Expert guided tours give the visitor an insight into the dark history of witch-hunting in the 17th century. Hiking enthusiasts should not miss this hike!

Hanseatic city of Rostock and the lower Recknitz valley

The almost 800-year-old Hanseatic city is the largest city in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with a population of about 200,000. With its seaside resort Warnemünde it is situated on both banks of the Warnow. At the time of the Hanseatic League, Rostock gained great importance as a trading centre.

The first university in Northern Europe was founded here in 1419.
In accordance with its history rich in tradition, Rostock has many historical sights to offer – the monumental Marienkirche with its valuable art treasures, the monastery of the Holy Cross near the university or the rebuilt 117 m high tower of the Petrikirche. In addition, there are the remaining four city gates, the town hall and the Nikolai Church.
A very famous major event in Rostock is the annual four-day Hanse Sail in the Rostock city harbour. Every year about one million visitors admire sailing ships of all kinds and sizes. Before the gates of Rostock in eastern direction the nature reserve Unteres Recknitztal with wet meadows and moors is located. In this enchanting valley there are several beautiful manor hotels, which serve as ideal starting points for exploring Rostock, the Baltic Sea coast and the inland. Friedrichshof Manor House, Gutshotel Neu Wendorf

Parks and gardens

The flood of the ducal castles and manor houses also resulted in an equally large number of manor parks and palace gardens. The skilful integration of the landscape, especially by garden architects such as Peter Josef Lenné, resulted in parks and gardens of astonishing size and variety. A dream for garden lovers. A large number of them have been restored. However, the overgrown estate parks, often only recognisable by their giant trees and exotic solitary trees, are also worth a journey of discovery through the country. The park of Kaarz Castle near Schwerin was created in 1873 according to the plans of C. Ansorge on 70,000 m². In addition to some 500 year old oaks, exotic sequoias, Douglas firs and cypresses can be found here. While walking, guests discover an idyllic pond and an ancient orchard. In the front part of the park is the Bülow’s Chapel, in the back the impressive mausoleum.

The Güstrow Palace Garden was laid out at the same time as the construction of the Renaissance palace by Duke Ulrich zu Mecklenburg as a large pleasure garden parterre with arcades, pleasure houses, water features and fragrant plants. The 200-hectare Lennépark in Basedow is considered one of the most important works of the German landscape architect.
None other than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once took a stroll in the 180-hectare landscape park of Schlitz Castle. The extensive grounds with wide avenues, old and partly rare trees, hidden ponds, 36 monuments in the form of obelisks, grottos and columns and the many idyllic squares invite you to dream and discover. Particularly famous is the Nymph Fountain, which was originally designed by Walter Schott in 1903 for the Wertheim department store in Berlin and shows three life-size bronze girls dancing on the fountain.

Bothmer Castle and Park are impressively embedded in the landscape of the Klützer Winkel. The estate is situated on a 7 ha island, surrounded by a closed moat according to the Dutch model. After several years of renovation it is now accessible as a museum.

You can find out more about the history and architecture of the manors and manor houses of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern on the website www.schloesser-gaerten-mv.de
